A top running bridge crane is one of the most commonly used overhead crane types, designed with a fixed rail system installed on top of each runway beam. This design allows for unrestricted lifting capacity, accommodating loads from 1 ton to over 500 tons, making it ideal for a wide range of industrial applications. Top running bridge cranes are particularly well-suited for buildings with limited headroom, as their rail-mounted design provides extra lifting height compared to underhung cranes. They can be configured as single girder or double girder systems. Single girder designs use an under-hung trolley and hoist, offering a cost-effective solution for lighter loads, while double girder models feature a top running trolley and hoist, maximizing hook height and lifting capacity.


Single Girder Top Running: Equipped with a single bridge girder supported on end trucks. The hoist travels on the bottom flange of the girder. Capacity typically up to 25 tons. Applications include warehouses, workshops, assembly lines, maintenance and repair facilities for lifting and moving small to moderate loads.
Double Girder Top Running: Equipped with two bridge girders, providing greater strength and stability. The hoist is mounted on a trolley running on tracks on top of the girders. Capacity up to 500 tons or more. Applications include heavy manufacturing, steel mills, power plants, and large-scale industrial projects.
Load Capacity: Top-running cranes must be strong enough to safely lift the required loads. Double-beam cranes are particularly useful for heavy applications because of their greater load distribution and stability. Crane design needs to consider dead load (the weight of the crane itself), live load (the weight of the material being lifted), and dynamic load (the forces generated during acceleration, deceleration, and sudden stops).
Support Columns and Track Beams: Top-running cranes often require separate support columns and track beams to ensure structural stability. If the existing building structure cannot meet the support needs of the crane, additional steel columns may need to be installed.
Material Strength and Durability: Steel is the primary material for top-running cranes because of its high strength and fatigue resistance. The various components of the crane must be able to withstand the stresses of daily use.
The crane must have sufficient space for horizontal and vertical movement to ensure unobstructed operation. Factors that need to be evaluated include track length, space for end stops and buffer zones, and the layout of aisles and work areas. Space planning should take into account the size and shape of the load being lifted, the crane’s swing radius and travel path.
